Q: When I click on the link to the GIS, the map won't load, or it takes a long time for the map to appear.
A: Users on dial-up internet (56k), as opposed to high speed will find that it takes possibly up to one minute for the map image to display, and to reload during processing.
A: The internet connection to the city's server may be down, or being serviced.
A: The City's GIS Division may be working on the site - updating, upgrading, and general improvements.
Q: I get the error message "Layer not found or error processing your request", what is this?
A: This generally indicates that the city's GIS Division is updating the data on the map. Try waiting for several seconds and then hitting the refresh button in your browser.
A: If you get this message for a period of time, then there may be server problems.
Q: Where can I find help?
A: You can find help on the system by clicking the blue "Help" tab, or by contacting the GIS Division via e-mail.
Q: I have Firefox as my default web browser, does this system work with my browser?
A: Yes, the City's web based GIS will work with most web browsers, including Firefox.
Q: Why is it, that when I zoom in, the air photos no longer display or are available?
A: The air photos have a limited scale of 1:12,000. Anything below that scale, the air photos are not available to you.
A: You can purchase aerial photography prints from the Planning & Development Department's GIS Division. You can order custom locations within the City of Quinte West.
Q: I am trying to find information feature on a layer, but when I click using the "i" icon, I don't receive any information.
A: Make sure that the layer you are "querying" has it's "i" highlighted in the layers on the left hand side of the map. The highlighted layer (or active) layer should have the "i" shown as black - click on the "i" to the left of the layer you want to query.
A: You can also use the white "i" with the layers icon (drill down) locating within the red tool box (advanced tools). This will retrieve information on all the features and layers that you click on, not just the active layer.
Q: I've been working on the system, where did my original layer list go, that I started with?
A: Click on the Blue Tab at the top named "Layers" and the layer legend will reappear.
Q: How do I search on a street address?
A: Click on the binoculars icon, select the ward it is located in - "Trenton Properties, Murray Properties, Frankford properties, or Sidney properties." Select " address" and then select "contains". Then type in the address you want.
TIP: leave off the street type - i.e. Leave off Road, Street, Lane, Blvd.
Q: How do I find out what the different colours and symbols mean on the map?
A: Click on the Legend tab button, and the legend will appear to the right of the map.
Q: How do I find a business on the map?
A: Click on the $ icon . Select "name" and "contains" and then type in part of what you think the name of the business is. TIP: Not all businesses are in the system. Businesses within the city are encouraged to join this system.
Q: Can I search on a property by ROLL NUMBER?
A: Yes. Click on the binoculars icon. Select the ward you are searching on "Trenton Properties, Murray Properties, Sidney Properties, or Frankford Properties", and then select "roll number" then "contains", and then type in the roll number. Then click on search.
Q: Why can't I search on properties on the CFB Trenton/* WING?
A: There are no property searches available for the Base, but you can still search on the roads by the road name.
Q: What are the blue tabs with the Ward Names and Downtown Trenton for?
A: They are quick zooms that will take you to these wards or Downtown Trenton automatically.
Q: I created an Adobe pdf map using the system but when I try to print it, I get any error?
A: Update your Adobe Acrobat Reader to the newest version. It is available at www.adobe.com and you can download it there for free.
Q: What if I find an error on the map?
A: Please notify the GIS Division contacts at any one of the following:

Q: What year are the air photos and when will they be updated next?
A: The air photos are from May, 2002. It is hoped that the city will be getting updated satellite imagery in the near future but no definite date has been determined.
Q: Can I customize the way my map looks?
A: You can customize your map using several methods:
-turning on the layers you want to be visible, and those you don't want off
-click on the symbol to the right of the layer name and you will get a menu where you can change the way the layer looks. i.e. Colours, labels, outline colours, linetypes
-you can save the way your map looks for next time, by using the "Save Session" which is the floppy disk. Next time you come back, you can open your previously saved session.
