GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is the input, the storage, the
manipulation, analysis, reporting, and output of digital spatial data using
computers and peripherals.
The GIS Division at the City of Quinte West was created in 1999, and is part
of the Corporate Support Services Department. The GIS Division consists of the
GIS Coordinator and the GIS Technician.
Currently GIS is being used by city departments such as the Planning and
Development, Public Works, Finance, Fire, By-law Enforcement, Community and
Leisure Services, and Corporate Services. The GIS provides these departments
with both digital GIS mapping and hardcopy print outputs. They have developed
GIS applications and data to assist the daily operations of the City, and
approximately 40 staff members run GIS from their desktops.
Many different themes or layers of geographic data exist that the GIS
Division has created. These include but are not limited to:
- Property ownership and assessment
- Zoning and official plan classifications
- 9-1-1 parcel fabric and street names
- Road and railway network
- Water and sewer infrastructure, fire hydrants and hydrant lines
- Woodlands, wetlands, and marshlands
- Lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams
- Contours and spot elevations
- Residences and schools, fire halls, hospital, libraries, city offices,
community halls
- City parkland and other city owned lands
- Vacant and occupied industrial lands
- Heritage buildings and lands
- Soil classification, and aggregate resources
- Aerial photography (partial coverage only)
The Division has been contracted by several Municipalities in Ontario to
implement and manage their GIS. Please contact the GIS Coordinator for more
information if your municipality, government agency, or business requires any
GIS/Mapping services.
ESRI, a GIS software company has recently featured the Quinte West GIS
Division in ArcNews Online. Click here to read the article.
The GIS Division accepts requests for specific information such as GIS data,
analysis, and hard copy maps. Please call 613-392-2841 to request printed and
digital maps. Charges and restrictions will apply.
If you wish to see the GIS in action, please visit the City of Quinte West
City Hall, 7 Creswell Drive, Trenton, to
see the public GIS kiosk, displaying many layers of spatial information in
